Summary: An account of the methods, aims and achievements of Penn school, the first southern black school, opened in the early sixties, located on the island of St. Helena off the coast of South Carolina. The first section of the book tells of the functioning of the school before Miss Cooley and her associates went there to introduce modern educational methods. The latter chapters trace the history of the school.

Condition: Hardcover, Ex-lib – usual stamps and marks, pocket inside front cover and remains of checkout sheet on fly. Covers show slight wear and light soiling. Spine seam is cracked in several places so pulling slightly and a little loose but still intact. Overall good.
