Publication Information: Survey Associates, Inc. New York. The Survey was published twice-a-month, the Survey Graphic was published monthly. “The Survey Graphic was a US magazine launched in 1921. From 1921 to 1932 it was published as a supplement to the Survey and became a separate publication in 1933. The Survey Graphic focused on sociological and political research and analysis of national and international issues. Article topics included fascism, ant-Semitism, poverty, unions and the working class and education and political reform. The magazine ceased publication in 1952.”
Additional Information: Pages were run consecutively in these issues. In this issue they run from 621 to 724 which includes pages of ads both in the front and back. Illustrated. Page 622-623 is an ad by The National Urban League which was an organization that sought to improve the relations between the races in America. The first page 621 is a ad for the Metropolitan Life Insurance but has had a newspaper clipping: “DeLawd of “Green Pastures” Collapses from Heart Attack” glued to it with a penciled date of 1935 written on it.
Summary: This issue Harlem Mecca Of The New Negro was a special issue devoted to the African-American literary and artistic movement now known as the Harlem Renaissance. See scan for list of the contents.
Condition: This stapled publication has been bound in a cardboard type folder and is held in by a threaded string from outside to center of the issue in multiple places. The original front cover and original back cover of the issue have been glued to the covers of the cardboard folder. Both original front and back covers have some soiling and some scuffing. Some bowing to the issue folder covers. The first two pages (621-624) and the last two pages (721-724) are tanned in color. There are some small tears and pages edges show little wear and one page has a 4” by ¾” piece of margin missing on the outside side edge of the page but it does not affect anything but the blank margin area. Some small soiled spot thru-out the issue. Overall it’s a readable copy of a rare publication with some nice illustrations. If you would like more illustrations showing anything please ask.
